This year more than any other in over 30 years of putting faculty and students in caps and gowns I have had numerous questions concerning
what a faculty member may wear if their school cannot be found on our custom regalia list. There seemed to be genuine concern that they would not be able to purchase the regalia needed to participate in commencement exercises.
Rest easy! Not every school has designed their own custom gown. While all hoods reflect the degree of the individual and the colors of the school conferring this degree, gowns are most often black with black velvet panels in the front and black velvet bars on the sleeves. This is a combination all academic doctors may wear.
The velvet color on your gown may be changed to reflect your degree; PhD blue, Medicine green, Law purple, Theology red, to name a few. See Your Design where you can create your own design with our unique template.
Keep in mind that while we do stock black velvet and PhD blue velvet gowns, other colors would be custom made and would require extra time for production. Plan ahead.
